Madeline was a 21-year-old (in 2019) Buckskin pony mare. She was a remarkably strong-willed girl. She had been turned out in a field with other horses when she was younger. At some point, she sustained a kick that broke her elbow. She needed immediate veterinary attention for this serious injury but unfortunately, did not receive it. For more than a year she compensated by walking on three legs, keeping her weight off the broken elbow. As a result, the tendons in that leg contracted. There was a chance that surgery could help. As with any surgery there are no guarantees, but Madeline’s undeniable spirit deserved a chance. With the kind support of many people, Mylestone made the surgery possible, and a rehabilitative brace was handcrafted especially for her.

With lots of tender loving care she embarked on a long recovery. Despite these wonderful efforts, Madeline was ultimately unable to manage with the brace, and it was easier for her to let her do her best on her three good legs

Arthritis settled in the site of the injury so she was closely monitored by the veterinarian. Changes in her right hind leg also caused issues. She seemed to be doing well, and we monitored her daily for any changes.

Our irrepressible Madeline had the will of an elephant in a small pony body. This undeniable spirit even inspired a children’s book about her, available on the website. She enjoyed a modest amount of celebrity as a result.

Madeline drew much attention each year at Open House from young and old.

Madeline was very well loved by all who met her. Due to her disability, our sweet Madeline remained a permanent resident at Mylestone whose sponsors and visitors adored her. Sadly, in June 2019, she had increased trouble in getting around on her three good legs, until one day, she could no longer stand at all. She was humanely euthanized, held and cuddled to the very end. The farm will not be the same without her.
